HISTORY OF THE PUB

There has been in a pub in the Northumberland salmon-fishing village of Horncliffe for over 250 years, since 1760.

The pub was once owned by Stuart Brown’s family. Brown went on to become editor of The Scotsman newspaper and wrote fondly of the pub and the village.

The building was bought in 2015 and run as a viable pub for over four years, until the owner said he was considering converting it into residential dwellings. The prompted a unified response from residents to protect the pub by gaining Asset of Community Value (ACV) status.

After a spirited fundraising campaign the pub was purchased by the Community Benefit Society on 29th July 2022.

A vibrant and welcoming village pub helps alleviate loneliness and creates a sense of belonging within the community.

THE LOCAL AREA

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Horncliffe is by the River Tweed, which is also the border between Scotland and England.

Locals and visitors can enjoy beautiful River Tweed walks and the Lower Tweed Trail as well as the Northumberland Coast and Castles Cycle Route and nearby Cheviot Hills. The Fishers Arms will provide a welcome rest, drink and something to eat.

Our many local attractions include the world-famous Union Chain Bridge and Chain Bridge Honey Farm, both within walking distance.

We have two salmon fishing beats in the village with ghillies and aim to provide accommodation for fisherman and visitors alike in the pub’s two en-suite rooms.

The Union Chain Bridge is the oldest surviving vehicular chain bridge in the world. The bridge has just undergone extensive refurbishment and will be a major draw for visitors to the area.

The bridge crosses the River Tweed and forms the border between England and Scotland.

 EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Horncliffe has a strong sense of community and the Fishers Arms has always been the focal point for activities and clubs, and a meeting place for locals and visiting cyclists and walkers.

Horncliffe Events organise a Salmon Procession in January and a Beer and Music Festival in July, both run in conjunction with the Fishers Arms.

We want the Fishers Arms pub at the heart of our Northumbrian community for generations to come.
Thank you for helping make this a reality.
